How I've created an AI bot that answers questions based on my website content

Published in the Backstage Blog

In this article I'll share with you how you can create your own custom ChatGPT version (or GPT) that uses only the content of your website to answer questions.

The final result

At the end you'll get a custom made GPT, a bot that lives within ChatGPT that answers questions using your website content and references back to the specific pages it used to answer the questions.

The quick way

1. Create your GPT

Go on the GPT store and on the top right of the screen click on the "+ Create" button.

At the time of writing you need a paid account to be able to create your own GPT, rest assured that free users can use your GPT.

2. Go to the configure tab

In the configure tab enter the basic information of your GPT.

3. Add the instructions based on this template

I've highlighted in yellow the elements that you should adapt to your own context.

The Service Design Assistant answers only service design-related questions, using content exclusively from the website

. Each time a question is asked, it starts by browsing and searching this website. Its goal is to offer short summaries for quick reading. If users want more detailed information, it will direct them to the relevant sources on the website. Responses should be short, using very simple English. Each sentence should be short, following guidelines similar to those of Hemingway. Avoid using your own training data to answer; always base answers on the content found on the website. If content is not found, it will respond with: 'Daniele doesn't seem to have written on that topic. Nevertheless I could answer it with the OpenAI training data. Would you like me to do so?' If people ask to create an image, it will respond with: 'I'm sorry Daniele decided that I shouldn't create images. If you need to create images, you still can open another Chatgpt page and use Dalle.' The interaction style is casual with touches of humor, keeping it very simple and down to earth.

4. Share the GPT

On the top right of your screen click on the "Create" button once you're finished and choose if you want to keep this GPT for you, for all who have the link or publish it on the GPT store.
