Bergmann's law of useless help

This Service Design Principle draft has been sent to my by Jochen Bergmann by email. I put here so that we can all collaborate on this more easily:

When applying for a job, I sometimes have to enter data into an ATS (Applicant Tracking System). The User Experience with these systems is a story for another time, but: Some offer you to upload your CV and extract data like, date of birth, education and even skills automatically.

But boy, does that "scanned Jochen" different from the real one! These scanner cannot deal well with anything other than a plain Word file, so you need to upload something no human person would appreciate very much. And even then, the translation of the CV into standardized data is horrible.

In the end, I wish they wouldn't have offered this automatic scanning. Entering data manually is a pain in the neck, but OK. It's just bad to get your hopes up and be disappointed and then enter data manually.

Possible titles

"Don't offer help if it's useless" or more generally, "Don't promise me something that you cannot keep"
