A Service Design Principle to better notice the great work of team mates.
At the end of the year, I review my achievements of the year. To do this, I first write down the things I'm proud of and remember. Often there are few, but it's not so exciting.
The same happens with yearly reviews at work. We review what we can remember, and we don't see the huge amount of daily achievements that happened during the year. What if we had a system that could help us remember more?
For that, we could get inspiration from what I do in the second part of my end-of-year achievements review. I go into a "journal" of little daily achievements that I have in Notion. I then see that in 2022 I had 1528 such tiny achievements, with 197 being big achievements and 10 being life goal achievements. Okay, now that feels like an awesome year! When I review the bigger achievements, I'm astonished by all that I managed to do during the year that I don't remember!
Imagine if your boss did something similar (maybe slightly less extreme but in that direction). During your yearly review, he could tell you: I was impressed by the presentation you did in February about how to improve our customer satisfaction! And then, he would continue by sharing many more such examples.
If that were the case, you would certainly feel noticed!
Action question
How can you create a system that helps you keep track of the small achievements your team makes during the year so that you can reveal it during the yearly employee review?
