Service Design Q&A

I'm slowly building a library of answers to the most common questions about Service Design. Here are the new ones:

How do you start a competition analysis for a new physical service?

In short:

Google maps and search: Look online what already exist and create a custom map using the My Maps Google tool.
On-site walking: walk in the neighborhood to see if you missed something or if something you found has closed.
Asking people: show your map to locals to verify if you missed something or if there are errors.

What are tricks when creating digital maps with Google Maps for research?

In short:

Use the Google My Maps tool: The free My Maps by Google makes it possible to create a digital map very easily.
Create different layers: make it easy to show or hide groups of information and use color codes and icons to make the map easier to read.
Change the map style: change the style of the map to "Light Political" to hide a lot of the Google Map mess and to see the pins you added more clearly.
Write a synthesis of what you've learned: The map is not what's important. What's important is what you learned out of it, make this very clear.

How can I make street or door to door survey less akward?

In short:

Bring a gift: Make the relationship a two way thing, for example by offering a chocolate gift.
Ring from outside the building: Even if one person let's you in, before you move to the next appartment, go out and ring from outside of the building, to make it easier for people to say no and better respect their "safe space".

Positive news from elsewhere

I’m an optimist and as there is so much bad news out there at the moment, I want at my scale to rebalance things by sharing also some positive news for service owners and creators.

More tigers in India: Tiger occupancy increased by 30% (at 2929 square kilometers per year) over the past two decades, leading to the largest global population occupying ~138,200 square kilometers. (Science)
Lab-grown meat for pets: World’s first lab-grown meat for pets goes on sale in the UK where dogs can now feast on laboratory treats. (The Verge)
Rice with less emissions: Scientists have bred a new strain of rice that could cut emissions from paddy fields by almost three-quarters. And you can do it using traditional breeding methods, without GMO. (Positive News)
