In short: Re-using events formats for your Service Design community makes it easier:

  • To onboard guests

  • To do the marketing for the events

  • For participants to know what they get into

Not having a format takes more time

Re-inventing the wheel takes a shit load of time. Instead of starting each time from scratch for each of your new Service Design events, you can re-use the formats you've developed.

That doesn't mean you have just one format for all your events, but you might have maybe 2-3 for all the events you host.

And yes, when you start your community you might want to try out many different formats. But then over time you notice that what is important is not so much the format of the event, but it's that people meet together, no matter what the format is.

Why re-using event formats rocks

The advantages of using formats repeatedly are that:

  • Guest onboarding: It’s easy to onboard guests as you can point them to example of what will happen

  • Marketing: It’s easier to copy and paste the generic information about what will happen during the event in your marketing material

  • Familiarity: People know what they get into. Once they came once they know how the other events with the same format will be. And that sense of familiarity is something that reassures a lot of people.
