How much do I script and mess up the recording of my Q&A videos

In this article I want to share a real-life example of a script and unedited recording for one my Service Design Q&A to reveal how much preparation, recording time and editing is needed to produce such a video.

A bit of context

I'm slowly building a library of answers to the most common questions about Service Design. That's why I shoot videos where I try my best to give my personal take on a question related to Service Design.

Answering these questions is as much an act of sharing, than an act of learning. In fact, it's often by answering the question that I clarify my own opinion and often better remember the tiny parts of the elements I share.

How does a script look like?

Before I start shooting the video I write down rough notes in the iA Writer app. I keep these notes visible on my laptop as I'm shooting the video.

How long do I record?

For the seven minute video that gets shared in the end I have a 19 minutes recording. This means about about 37% of the recorded video gets used in the final edit.

If you want to see me fail many times at trying to deliver the same line you can see the full 19 minutes below. Just note that there is a lot of time without me speaking, where I'm either thinking or reading my notes.

The goal for me sharing this unedited recording is to show that it's totally normal to mess up a lot in the recording. It also shows that it's through delivering that I clarify my own thinking.

How much time does it take from start to finish?

It takes between 2 hours and 2 hours and a half to go from zero to a finished Service Design Q&A video.

  • Shoot the video

  • Edit it

  • Publish it on my Service Design Brain

  • Add it to my newsletter

  • Publish it on Linkedin

The shooting part as you see, isn't the one that takes the longest as I "only" spend 19 minutes on it.
