How and why I'm using Apple Notes as a companion to my Notion setup

In this tiny article I share why I use Apple Notes as a temporary place to take notes before publishing online or storing for the long term in Notion.

Published in the Backstage Blog

I use Notion a lot! It's the home for a lot of my work. It's where I store all my notes about the things that I don't want to forget. But Notion has one huge problem: speed. Notion is really slow.

So as I'm making my move back to more writing rather than video creation, I'm spending more time in notes apps. As I said the problem with Notion is it's speed.

So these days I'm using Apple Notes as a sort of temporary Inbox for my writing. When I have a quick idea for a Service Design Q&A I write the title there. The same goes for a blog post.

Then when I have a few minutes off between two big tasks or meetings, I'm opening Apple Notes and start writing in one of these notes. Texts like Service Design Q&A or blog posts are then published online, so I don't need to have the draft in Apple Notes or Notion, so I just delete it as the online version is richer with links, images, etc.

If I need to store elements for a longer time, I still put them in Notion.

But for the temporary stuff where I need an app that opens fast, Apple Notes is just better.

Will I switch fully to Apple Notes?

At the moment I don't think so. I have so much content in Notion that migrating might be a pain in the ass. Plus Apple Notes doesn't have the more advanced things like easy note sharing, nicer tables and more important even: databases.

At the same time, I've noticed that I'm much less geeky these days with my Notion setup, and who knows, maybe down the road I'll get back to a simpler setup. One thing that might make me switch in the future is if the Apple Intelligence features that are on device really work well. This could mean that I could have a fully Mac setup where Apple Intelligence can help me find things everywhere. Which couldn't happen if I'd use Notion as my home base. But frankly said, I'm not sure it will be that good. Time will tell.
