I'm rediscovering the beauty of writing

In this tiny article I'm sharing 5 great things I rediscovered about writing compared to video publishing.

If you're an avid reader of this blog you might now that I've made the decision to reduce drastically my video production in order to hopefully use more resources (water and electricity).

As I'm coming back to writing after months of investing a lot in video I'm rediscovering some of the beauties of writing.

Here are a few that I rediscovered in these last days:

  1. It's damn fast: writing is so much faster than video. You just write. To do a video, you have to write a few notes, prepare a set or your camera, edit the video, export it and publish it.

  2. You can do it in drops: as it's quick to write, when I have 10-15 minutes of free space in my day I can easily get started on an article. Maybe I don't finish the full thing, but I've made enough progress that it's easy to come back. Also with a text, it's pretty clear where you left things. With video editing it takes some time to know where you left things.

  3. It's easy to edit in post: with video, when in the recording your forgot to mention something or messed up it's a bit hard to add elements (even if AI voices can be helpful). With text, it's super easy and fast.

  4. You can write anywhere: I can write in the train, in the bus, in my bed. Yes I can do video editing in all these places but I can't shoot videos in all these places. I could but I'm way too shy to do some vlogging in the middle of a tram. It's especially nice to write while you are walking somewhere in the middle of the city. You arrive and you have a draft.

  5. It's fast to transfer to other platforms: With just a copy and paste, I can easily bring stuff from my website to Linkedin. With video, I have to make sure the video is uploaded, I have to wait for that, I have to add the transcript to make it accessible, and I have to make a custom thumbnail to hope that people watch it. It just takes longer.

I'm not saying it's all sunshines and rainbows. I kind of miss the fun part of video editing where you play with music and animations and then rewatch it proudly. But I'm happy that the transition back to more writing isn't just a pain in the ass but that it comes with some lovely benefits too.
