What to consider when designing a new service?
The full question
What considerations should be made when designing a new service for your customers?
My two cents
That’s a big question. I’ll give here just a few starting points.
In short when you are building a new service you should make sure that the service you are providing:
- solves a customer problem and is desirable
- is technically feasible and
- that it is economically viable
These are the three big categories of considerations that you should take into account and will make sure that you take into account both the user side and the business side. These three notions are based on the Design Thinking Framework from Tim Brown / IDEO.
For each category of consideration there are then multiple other considerations to take into account. A good starting point for the the desirability of a service is to use the two following methods:
- Jobs to be done interviews: this will help you understand the needs, pains and fears of the people you want to serve
- Value Proposition Canvas: this model helps you summarize your learnings in a condensed format
